SD Agricultural Heritage Museum

SD History Day Presentation by Brookings High School Students

Come join us at the Agricultural Heritage Museum at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, for a look at the winning National History Day project documenting the impact of Dr. Walter Freeman's lobotomy on modern day brain treatment.  Three ninth-grade students from Brookings High School, Molly Scarbrough, Jackie Meyer, and Jenna Scarbrough, will travel to Washington, D.C.., to present their winning documentary at the Kenneth Behring National History Day Contest in June.  At the Ag Museum program, they will show their documentary and answer questions about the process they went through to develop the award-winning project. They will also explain why they chose to do research and learn more about how the lobotomy advanced treatment for people who suffered from mental illnesses.
National History Day is an exciting way to study history and learn about issues, ideas, people and events. Learning the skills and techniques of a historian, students research and develop a project according to the parameters of the theme and rules of the NHD program.  The South Dakota History Day program has been in existence for 30 years.  The Agricultural Heritage Museum and the South Dakota Humanities Council have sponsored it for the past two years, with the state contest held on the campus of SDSU.  Please come and learn more about South Dakota History Day and see how students research and develop their projects to compete at the district, state, and national competition.

Letters from the Prairie Readers Theater and 28th Annual Festival of Cultures

April 8th at 7:00pm

Letters from the Prairie

Reader's Theater

Bob Kolbe created this readers theater from "kept correspondence" he found at a flea market.  The letters belonged to a graduate of Southern State Teachers College, dating from the late 1890's. These letters give a glimpse into the life of school teachers' lives on the prairie of central South Dakota from 1900-1915.  Images from the period are paired with 3 women's voices in this short production.

On Friday April 9, 2010 the museum will have a booth at the 28th Annual Festival of Cultures.  The Festival is on Friday, April 9, 2010 from 9a.m.
to 3p.m. in the SDSU Frost Arena.

Admission is $2 per person and Free to SDSU students with ID.

This cultural event continues to be an educational celebration of diversity with the Brookings community, State of South Dakota, and surrounding areas.

Come enjoy this whole day of events by sharing diverse languages, performances, arts, activities and games, international poster presentations, and international cuisine in a cultural fair setting.

Stop by the museum's booth and say hi!
